April 2013 is the 45th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 which prohibits housing discrimination on the basis of:

  • Race
  • Color
  • National origin
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Familial status
  • Handicap

Additionally, the Realtor® Association is celebrating 100 Years of Ethics.

Members of the REALTORS® Associations have protected property ownership for over 100 years. This organized this group of real estate agents came together with “the singular goal of establishing high ethical standards to protect buyers and sellers.”

In 1974 the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was incorporated into the REATORS® Code of Ethics. In 2010, REALTORS® moved beyond the existing federal classes, according to The 2013 Fair Housing Focus Realtors® Code of Ethics Hits 100 Years Publication, “to ensure equal services without regard to sexual orientation. The Code’s Preamble tells REALTORS® and the public we serve ‘…the interests of the nation and its citizens require the highest and best use of the land and the widest distribution of land ownership” as well as ‘… the creation of adequate housing, the building of functioning cities, the development of productive industries and farms, and the preservation of a healthful environment.

REALTORS®’ commitment to Article 10 and to fair housing ensures equal professional services for consumers and protects the dream of home ownership and diverse and thriving American communities. ”
