It’s Radon Month in Iowa

A few months back I blogged “Radon is the 2nd Leading Cause of Cancer in the United States”.

Radon is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas which is created when the element radium breaks down through radioactive decay. It kills more people by lung cancer than smoking. Think of that ….. radon kills 21,000 people every year.

January is National Radon Action Month

radon monthiowa radon mapIowa is one of the states with high levels of radon. The map here is not an indication you WILL have radon in your home, but the tendency of radon is found in our state and should be tested. In fact when you purchase or sell in Iowa, it is mandatory to include a disclosure with the purchase.

However, there is no mandatory mitigation specifically in place for the time of transfer.

According to Iowa’s Association of REALTORS®, radon is measured in pico-Curies per liter of air (pCi/L).

The average indoor radon level is estimated to be about 1.3 pCi/L, and about 0.4 pCi/L is found normally in the outside air.

If your test result in a 4 pCi/L or more, your home needs to be fixed.

There are many ways your home can be mitigated for radon, but you should use a contractor to find out what method is the best for your home’s situation.

You can hire a radon test done to your home. The State of Iowa has a list of certified radon mitigation specialists. For more information about mitigation specialists, contact the Iowa Department of Health. You can also contact the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) at 1-800-269-4174 for a list of qualified specialists who serve your area.

…. Or you can do it yourself. Do-it-yourself Radon Test Kits through the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest

Whether done professionally or by yourself, radon tests should be done every couple years.
