Radon is the 2nd Leading Cause of Cancer in the United States

Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Real estate agents in Iowa must present prospective homebuyers a fact sheet on radon that homebuyers must receive any data if a home has been tested for radon.

Radon is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas which is created when the element radium breaks down through radioactive decay. It kills more people by lung cancer than smoking. Think of that ….. radon kills 21,000 people every year.

According to a report done by KCRG in 2011, “There are more homes now in need of radon mitigation than there were in the past,” said Bill Field, a University of Iowa researcher and author of several key studies linking radon and lung cancer. One of his recent studies found that people living five to 30 years in homes with radon concentrations of 3.0 picocuries per liter of air had an 11 percent to 21 percent increased risk of lung cancer. That risk increased with more radon exposure.”

The average indoor radon level is estimated to be about 1.3 pCi/L, and about 0.4 pCi/L is found normally in the outside air. If your test result in a 4 pCi/L or more, your home needs to be fixed.
